Background
Serum albumin (also known as BSA or "Fraction V") is a serum albumin protein derived from cows. It is composed of 585 amino acid residues, and its molecular weight is about 66.5KDa. The BSA is the main protein of plasma, and it has a good binding capacity for water, Ca2+, Na+, K+, fatty acids, hormones, bilirubin and drugs. Its main function is the regulation of the colloidal osmotic pressure of blood. It is often used as a protein concentration standard, and it has numerous biochemical applications including ELISAs (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay), immunoblots, and immunohistochemistry.
