Background

Chromogranin A (CgA), also called parathyroid secretory protein 1, is a member of the granin family of neuroendocrine secretory proteins. It is located in secretory vesicles of neurons and endocrine cells. Chromogranin A gene has 8 exons and 7 introns spanning about 11 kb. It is elevated in pheochromocytomas, and also used as an indicator for pancreas and prostate cancer and in carcinoid syndrome. It also plays a role in early neoplasic progression.
